Farrier
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopediaA farrier is a specialist in equine hoof care, including the trimming and balancing of a horse's hoof so as to fit shoes to the horse's foot. A farrier couples a subset of the blacksmith's skills (fabricating, adapting, and adjusting metal shoes) with a subset of veterinary medicine (knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the lower limb) to address the care of the horse's feet.
Jeff is a Certified Natural Hoof Care Practioner, Field Instructor, Level 9 Instructor and workshop clinician with the American Association of Natural Hoof Care Practitioners (AANHCP). He is practiced in the art of shoeing and blacksmith skills, but will no longer put shoes on a horses hoof. He firmly believes in keeping horses barefoot not only for better performance, but for the overall health of the horse.
Jeff is also an authorized dealer for Easy Care Inc and Cavallo boots. He's currently the only farrier in Mississippi authorized to fit the Swiss boot. He will be giving clinics on Natural Hoof Care in the near future.
Jeff will introduce himself to your horse when first meeting which helps keep the horse calm. He disciplines through work (backing up, turning circles). He does not believe in sedating or twitching but will teach a horse to stand. Jeff specializes in hoof repair and founder and believes in educating his clients for better hoof care and soundness. He will teach you how to trim your own horse if you want (cost $300 per day)
Natural hoof care involves more than just trimming your horse. It also involves rethinking how you take care of your horse. Proper nutrition and feed are important as well as proper conditioning for the hoof. A great place to look for good information on feed is www.safergrass.org. The more you know about proper nutrition for your horse the better off your horse will be.
Prices are currently $30 per trim within a 40 mile radius plus a $5 trip fee, then the cost is $35-45 depending on the distance. Jeff currently travels to the Gulf Coast on a 6 week basis. Boots start at $120 with a $50 fitting fee for Swiss boots.
